Great photos! Interesting that the south hasn't even picked up the milk element of chai and so many French coffee drinks...

My new favorite coffee additive is cardamom. It's popular in Turkey and Italy, though the spice originated in India and Sri Lanka I think? I heard there is also some theoretical health benefit when added to coffee, but who knows... Do you ever find it in coffee there?

Woohoo farmers market! Great photos Liv :) I'm getting one of those tamales for lunch today. And, i have good news on salmon, which is so rare these days. While chinook salmon levels have dropped off precipitously as everyone has heard, sockeye salmon has made an insane comback as of late, i.e., 10 years ago there were only about 10 observed in one season, and this year they've seen 800, the highest levels in 50 years! So lets think positive and keep dismantling those old dams!

Hi Brian! Thanks for the tip--I hadn't realized that the rubber ring or gasket let pressure out but didn't allow air in! I was just watching a show where they made kimchee and I'm pretty tempted to try that next...have any recipes you'd like to share?

This traveling food lover is absolutely delighted that the Rondon recipe was tried and better yet - given Olivia Nora Mark's out of this world magic touch and improved! So happy you tried it out, I only wish I was enjoying the results along with a mango rum cocktail with you and David...speaking of...I was recently moi excited by a surprisingly delightful breakfast of leftover rice pudding (ordinary cococut milk and vanilla style), with the rum we had left after infusing mango and cinnamon/pineapple and cloves, and after deciding that its perfectly acceptable to have rum for breakfast...et par chance, we had a handful of golden californian raisons left on the shelf! What joy! So rum and raison (a combination Ive never been a great fan of) rice pudding was one of the most satisfying breakfasts Ive ever had!
Oh Livi I cant wait for a proper big old chat - lots of love to everyone at Charleston.

Good for you! I have been using the same lacto-ferment method for making sauerkraut, kimchee, sour dill cukes, pickled turnips/beets/etc. for about a year now, and I love it. I could not go back to the dead, storebought products; there's no flavor comparison, let alone the health benefits of lactofermentation.

To keep the "aroma" down (my wife HATES the smell), I use 2-liter bail-top jars, the kind with the rubber gasket. It keeps air out but allows the building pressure to escape so the jar doesn't explode. I have several of these lurking in our cupboards with various bubbling concoctions.

I hope you keep it up! Love your blog!

H! I just update a saved google map and then hit the "link" button and paste the code they give me into the Maps page of my blog though now it seems to update itself! It was trial and error to figure out the first time but it seems to be easy.

I'm getting hungry just thinking of the delicious Chinese food I've had at your house and now you're even making it on the roadside!

I'm inspired - I officially have no excuses now to not try making it myself!
